ABA Therapy: How It Works and Helps Autism

Applied behavior therapy (ABA) is considered the most effective approach to treat people and children with autism. It is based on learning and behavioral science. A behavioral therapist uses positive reinforcement, which helps the children understand the behavior and encourages them to behave more positively.

ABA therapy involves understanding how behavior works and through which approach and technique negative behavior can be altered.

Every autistic individual deserves to be treated well and needs understanding of their condition; that’s why ABA therapy is proven to be the most effective approach in treating autism.

ABC Model of ABA Therapy

The ABC model is used in ABA therapy. It basically encourages positive reinforcement, which means rewarding a person for positive behavior to show encouragement and praise. Living in Marlboro also allows you to get ABA services Upper.

ABC: Antecedent, Behavior, Consequence

An antecedent is what happened before the individual’s behavior. It usually occurs in the environment. It can be a command from someone or from any toy, object, or even a sound. The behavior can also be caused by the internal feelings of the individual.

The behavior is the response to the antecedent. For example, if any toy is given to the child, which is an antecedent, the child may show a tantrum or share it with other children.  This isthe behavior.

Consequence comes after the behavior. It could be a positive reinforcement if the child has done something positive or no reaction at all for incorrect or inappropriate behavior. For example, if the child shows a tantrum, then you give them space to feel their emotions.

ABA Therapy Improves Communication

It is difficult for autistic children to communicate about their needs or feelings. In ABA therapy, the professional teaches the child different signs, words, and gestures so they can communicate their needs and hold any conversation.

A non-verbal child is taught to use different skills like picture cards to express themselves and communicate. A therapist trains the child daily by making them do practical skills like eating, playing, or various physical activities that involve using their motor skills.

Build Their Social Skills

Children or individuals with autism always face trouble while interacting with others. They feel fear or lack confidence in communicating. Getting that individual ABA therapy makes them learn more social skills. They are taught to remove the fear of strangers and then communicate with them.

Make Them Independent

ABA therapy is very helpful in training the individual and making them independent. During therapy, they learn to break the complex task into simpler ones, which later helps them do it on their own.

Washing hands involves several steps: pressing the soap, wetting the hands, massaging them, washing them, and drying them. The individual learns to master each task, and throughout the learning process, the therapist uses positive reinforcement to help them learn more quickly.

Reduces Abnormal Behavior

A therapist also helps in understanding the abnormal behavior of the individual by identifying the root cause of the problem. They notice what triggers the person or exactly what happens before the individual has done a specific behavior to identify the reason.
