Steven Rindner Lists a Few Trail Running Tips for Beginners

Trail running is all about running in nature. It allows runners to ditch the paved roads, city lights, and noise of traffic, for steeper gradients, softer terrain and much more fun. As per Steven Rindner, trail running can help break up the drudgery of the treadmill and boredom of asphalt. The beautiful scenery and unpredictable terrain simply add to the experience.

Steven Rindner Highlights Certain Tips That Newbie Trail Runners Must Follow

Trying out trail running has many benefits. It firstly is much easier on the joints as opposed to road running. Running on uneven trails also improves the flexibility, balance, and ankle strength of the runners, and allows them to develop stronger leg muscles for faster running. The undulation of the trails keeps things exciting, and being in nature and absorbing the surroundings makes the entire experience quite rewarding. Many people go for trail running simply for the views.

Here are a few tips that newbie trail runners must follow to enjoy the experience to the fullest:

  • Do not become too focused on pace: Trail running does not only involve running, it also includes tiptoeing down steep descents and slogging up hills. Hence, one must not think too much about their speed and pace. It is better to run as per how one feels, rather than worrying out pace per mile or kilometre.
  • Fuel correctly for longer runs: Longer runs are common in trail running. Hence, if one is planning to escape into nature for more than an hour, they must fuel correctly. Runners must eat something a few hours prior to going on a trail run, and top up their hydration as necessary on the trails. This can involve drinking an electrolyte mix, consuming gels, or having a snack when one is going on an extra long run.
  • Know the way: Trail running gets runners off the roads and into nature. While this is definitely exciting, it also makes it a lot easier to get lost. Hence, runners must carefully research the trail prior to heading out for a run. If possible, they should also carry a GPS device on the run, in case they face difficulties in finding the way back home or to the car.  Many GPS watches and apps are available today that can map a run and provide runners with directions. However, if case one is unable to find signal on the trail, they have to depend on offline maps.
  • Wear the right gear: To stay comfortable throughout the trail run, it is important to wear the right gear. One must especially invest in a pair of quality trail running shoes. It is also prudent to buy a waterproof jacket and a good pair of socks.

As per Steven Rindner, while running alone on the trails can be a blissful experience, it would also be a good idea to have a running buddy. It can make the run more enjoyable and safe. In case one is running alone, they should at least let a friend or family member know where they are heading and, if possible, share the live location from a phone or GPS device.  Taking such simple steps would help ensure safety on the trails.
